BIOGRAPHY

Nancy Bishop, CSA is an award winning international casting director, based in London.

An American with strong ties to Los Angeles, she launched her film career in Prague before establishing her London office in 2015. She is the founder and former President of the European branch of the Casting Society of America (CSA).

With an extensive portfolio spanning major feature films and television, Nancy has worked with leading studios such as Paramount, Fox, and Universal, as well as top streaming platforms like Amazon, Apple, and Netflix.

Renowned for her keen eye for talent, she has been entrusted by some of the industry’s most influential creatives, including Sacha Baron Cohen for Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm, a project that earned her a CSA Artios Award for Best Casting in a Comedy. Her credits also include working alongside Brad Bird on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Bong Joon Ho on Snowpiercer. Passionate about independent cinema, she has cast scores of films, including Miranda’s Victim, the final film of Donald Sutherland’s prolific career. Additionally, her casting work on Anne Frank: The Whole Story starring Sir Ben Kingsley for ABC/Disney earned her an Emmy nomination. She has been nominated twice by actors for Mandy Awards in Casting, and is well known for her advice to actors on her weekly “#CastingTipTuesday,” on social media sites.

A native of New England, Nancy trained as an actor and director at the National Theatre Institute. She later earned a Master of Arts in Theatre History from Northwestern University. She began her career in Chicago, where she was participated in the foundation of two groundbreaking theatre companies—Strawdog Theatre and Theater Oobleck—both of which continue to thrive today. In the early 1990s, drawn by the artistic energy of post-Iron Curtain Prague, she directed and produced numerous theatre productions across Europe for Black Box Theatre. This chapter of her life was later captured in the cult film, Rex-Patriates, a mock-documentary film she produced and directed.

Beyond casting, Nancy is a dedicated acting coach and educator. She founded the Acting for Film program at the Prague Film School and has authored three books on the art of auditioning. Her latest, Auditioning for Film and TV: A Post-#MeToo Guide (Bloomsbury), is available worldwide.

In addition to the CSA, Nancy is an active member of several prestigious industry organizations, including BAFTA, the Television Academy, the European Film Academy, the International Casting Directors Association (ICDA), and the Casting Directors Guild (CDG).

Auditioning for Film and Television

A Post #MeToo Guide

Auditioning for Film and Television is a must-have guide, written from the perspective of a casting director and offering actionable advice on audition technique, scene analysis, online casting and social media.

Since the first edition was published in 2009, this practical workbook has helped countless actors learn the craft of auditioning for screen. Owing to the seismic changes within the industry following on from the #MeToo movement and, of course, the impact of social media and ever-advancing technology, how auditioning and casting are conducted has radically changed.

This third edition of Auditioning for Film and Television addresses these issues and how they come into play in the audition room, offering guidance on areas such as:

- How actors can most professionally conduct themselves in a casting situation, and on set, when there is sexuality inherent in a role
- How both interviewers and interviewees can keep the relationship clear, professional and above board
- What resources are available if issues arise

In addition, readers continue to benefit from the author's tried-and-tested advice that will help them to succeed in this crowded and competitive industry. Available in Paperback, Hardback and Ebook (PDF, Epub & Mobi). Click here to buy

Information for Actors

Hi Actors, Thank you for visiting my site!
I often get asked whether actors can email me. While it’s understandable that you’d want to reach out, randomly sending a reel or headshot isn’t the most effective approach. It’s best to get in touch when you have something specific to share—such as inviting me to a performance or letting me know about a launching film or TV show where I can see your work. Since casting directors focus on specific projects, you may also want to reach out when it’s particularly relevant—for example, if I’m casting a karate film in your area and you hold a black belt.

Otherwise, I recommend following me on social media, where I’m quite active—especially on #CastingTipTuesdays. Engaging with me there helps keep you on my radar.

Please note that I do not represent actors. As a member of the CSA, CDG, and ICDA, I cannot act as both a casting director and an agent. Agents play a crucial role in an actor’s career, advocating on your behalf, whereas a casting director works for production. While I’m sometimes asked for agent recommendations, I’m rarely able to provide them for various reasons. If you’re in the UK or Europe, I highly encourage you to register on Spotlight, Filmmakers, and E-Talenta. In the USA, platforms like Actors Access and Casting Networks are key resources. I use these sites regularly. Also, maintaining an active presence on IMDbPro is valuable.

For more industry insights, you can check out my books, including my latest:
Auditioning for Film and TV: A Post #MeToo Guide, published by Bloomsbury and available wherever books are sold.

Wishing you all the best in your career!
Nancy
